The Colorado Buffaloes enter the 2026 season with a new approach under Deion Sanders, prioritizing transfer portal additions over blue-chip recruits. After a disappointing 3-9 record in 2025, Sanders has assembled a roster heavy on experienced transfers, including players from Notre Dame and Northwest Missouri State. The Buffs open their campaign against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on September 4, 2026.
Sanders shifted his recruiting strategy after last year’s struggles. Instead of targeting high-profile high school recruits, he sought players with proven college experience. Walk-on Ben Finneseth, a Colorado native and team captain during the 1-11 2022 season, praised the new additions. 'These guys are hungry,' Finneseth said. 'They came in with a competitiveness and work ethic we didn’t have last year.'
After battling bladder cancer in 2025, Sanders returned to full strength. He admitted last year that his health issues affected his energy and presence. Now, he’s back with his signature swagger. 'I got that dog back,' Sanders said. 'I’m ready to get back on that sideline.'
The Buffs ranked near the bottom in both offense (No. 115 in yards per play) and defense (No. 118) last season. Sanders brought in new playcallers on both sides of the ball and added over 60 new players. The team’s cohesive mindset and leadership are the biggest differences from 2025.
Colorado’s transfer class was ranked No. 18 nationally by The Athletic. With a healthier Sanders and a roster full of experienced players, the Buffs believe they’re on the upswing. Their first test comes against Georgia Tech on September 4, 2026.
